Sudha Murty

Sudha Murty is an entrepreneur, lecturer, and author, born on 19^th August 1950 on Shiggaon, Haveri in Karnataka. She is the daughter of Dr. RH Kulkarni, a surgeon, and Vimala Kulkarni. She completed her engineering course in Electrical And Electronics Engineering from the BVB College of Engineering And Technology. She is a gold medalist and received it from Devaraj Urs, the then CM of Karnataka. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in EEE, she did her Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science. Again, she grabbed a gold medal for her excellence in academics and this time from the Indian Institute of Engineers. Sudha started her career as a development engineer in Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in Pune. Later, she worked for the same company in Mumbai and Jamshedpur. It is interesting to know how she got this job. When she noticed a job call in the newspaper from TELCO, she was interested in applying for the job. But, she noticed it as a gender-biased call and immediately wrote a letter to the TELCO Chairman regarding this. Impressed by her approach, she was immediately called to attend the special interview, and she was offered the job. After TELCO, she joined Walchand Group as a Senior Systems Analyst. While working in TELCO, Sudha and NR Narayana Murthy got married, and the couple has two children, Akshata and Rohan Murty. Akshata is married to Rishi Sunak, who is the Chancellor of Exchequer in the UK.

In 1996, Sudha and Narayana Murty founded Infosys Foundation. Infosys is one of the leading IT companies in India. Sudha is the Trustee of the foundation. Infosys Foundation endowed HR Kadim Diwan Building for the Computer Science and Engineering department at IIT Kanpur and the Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library at NLSIU. 

Besides being a good entrepreneur, she had authored many books and had also been a visiting professor. Sudha is an impressive speaker too. She attracts people with her mind-blowing speeches, and she is open to speaking about her life incidents, which attracts the public, and many consider her a living example. In 2006, the then Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam conferred the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honors in India, to Sudha. Through the Infosys Foundation, Sudha has built 2,300 houses for the needy in flood-affected areas. She has set up 70,000 libraries so far. Besides this, Sudha is helping the people in rural areas through the foundation by building 16,000 public toilets, and even in Bangalore, her team has built hundreds of toilets. She had helped people across India during natural disasters.
