Chen was born Kim Jong Dae on 1st September 1992 in Daejeon in South Korea. He joined the South Korean boy band Exo in 2011 at the age of 19. He is one of the top vocalists of Exo. Besides being a singer in Exo, Chen has recorded songs for some TV dramas, including It’s Okay That’s Love in 2014 and Descendants of the Sun in 2016. In 2014, Chen associated with SM The Ballad, the ballad group of SM Entertainment. Breath is the second album of Exo and Chen sang its Chinese version with Zhang Liyin. Chen had also sung duets with Shinee in Jonghyun. He released his first solo song in 2014. It was the OST made for It’s Okay That’s Love that telecast on SBS. The drama has D.O, Chen’s colleague in Exo.

His first solo song, The Best Luck for It’s Okay That’s Love, garnered him appreciation and brought Chen some awards, including the Best OST by a Male Artist at the 5th So-Loved Awards and Best OST Song at the 16th Seoul International Youth Film Festival. In 2014, Chen had a live performance at the 3rd APAN Star Awards. In 2015, Chen made his debut in the musical theater with the show, In The Heights. In 2016, along with Steve Barakatt, world-famous pianist, Chen performed the song Imagine at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. In the same year, the Exo group made their Extended Play debut with Hey Mama. In the next year, he collaborated with Dynamic Duo for a song, Nosedive. He had co-written lyrics for many songs, including "Touch It" and "Ko Ko Bop." I’m Not Okay is the original soundtrack for the Missing 9 drama telecast on MBC. Park Chanyeol, Chen’s colleague, played a supporting role in the drama. Don’t Mess Up My Tempo is the fifth album of Exo and Love Shot is the popular song in the album. Chen had co-written the lyrics for the song, which went viral. Chen is married and he has a daughter, who was born on 29th April 2020. Chen was all set to move to the military for the mandatory service and announced it after his drama, Do You Like Brahms. From 26th October 2020, he has been serving his country as an army man.
