Valayar Ramavarma was an Indian poet and lyricist. He was a modern Malayalam lyricist as well as a poet. Some of his famous works are Padamudrakal, Oru Judas Janikkannu, Mulankaadu, Sargasangeetham, etc. Valayar was born on 25 March 1928, in a village of Valayar, Alappuzha, Kerala. His father was Vellarappally Kerala Varma while his mother was Raghavaparambil Ambalika Thamburatty. He was married to Chandramathi Thampuratti. Later he got married to Bharathy Amma, and they have four children together. Their son Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma is a popular lyricist working for the Malayalam entertainment industry.

They also have three daughters, Yamuna, Indulekha, and Sindhu. Bharathy wrote Indradhanussin Theerathu, a book about his late husband, Vayalar. The book became controversial after it was published. Vayalar has written about 2000 songs that were showcased in almost 223 Malayalam films and various plays. He did poems about the revolution in the romantic notions. In addition, his poems talked about the power of science that took over religion over the years. His collaboration with Devarajan was the most talked about. The Valayar-Devarajan collaboration was very famous. Balikudeerangalae is one of his most popular songs. He wrote this song for the KPAC naatakaganam theatre.

His first poetic collection came in 1948. It was known as Paadamudrakal. Along with poetry collections, he also has written various Malayalam songs. His songs include Ente Chalachitragaanangal, which is in six parts. He also has story collections. They are Raktham Kalarnna Mannu and Vettum Thiruthum. He has written an essay called Purushaantharangalillode. His collected works include Valayar Krithikal and Valayar Kavithakal. For movies, Valayar has written songs like Butterfly Oh Butterfly, Onnu Pettu Kunju, Bhasmakkuri Thottu, Ithu Sisiram, Seemanthini Ninte, Thankathinkalthaazhika, Aham Brahmaasi, Kaadu Karuthakaadu, Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa, etc. The movies for which he has written songs are Thaamarothoni, Neelapponmaan, Athidhi, Sammaanam, Chuvanna Sandhyakal, etc.

Valayar has received many awards for his extensive poetic career. In 1961, he received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Sargasangeetham. He received the Best Lyrics Award for his song Manushyan Mathangale, Srishtichu from the film Achanum Bappayum at the 1973 National Film Awards The National Film Awards gets presented every year >> Read More... . Valayar passed away on 27 October 1975 at the age of 47 in Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. In memory of this great poet and lyricist, there is a statue in Thiruvananthapuram. In addition, in his native place Raghava Parambu, a memorial is made.
