Miss Kumari

Miss Kumari was a Malayalam actress who graced the screen during 1940-1960s.

Miss Kumari was born as Thresiamma Thomas on June 1, 1932, at Bharananganam in Kottayam District, Kerala. Her parents Thomas and Eliyamma were pure Catholics. Thresiamma did her schooling from Bharananganam Sacred Heart’s High School, which was a girls-only school run by Franciscan Clarist Sisters. Later on, she worked as a teacher in the same school. 

Miss Kumari entered the Malayalam silver screen with the film Vellinashaktram in the year 1949 which was the first film to be shot at Udaya Studio, Alappuzha. Although the movie didn't set the cash registers ringing Miss Kumari’s acting talent was well received and appreciated by both the audience and the filmmakers. Miss Kumari was recognized after her 1950 blockbuster film Nalla Thanka where she essayed the role of NallaThanka. Nalla Thanka was a remake of the Tamil movie Nalla Thankal which was made in 1935. Miss Kumari scaled new heights of stardom after the huge success of her movie Neelakuyil in the year 1954. She acted in over 50 movies, for around 20 years. Miss Kumari entertained the Tamil fans also by acting in some Tamil movies. She was thus honored with the Madras State Award for Best Actress in 1956.

Miss Kumari was married to Hormis Thaliath. He was an F.A.C.T engineer. The couple had three children. The eldest of them Johny is in the movie industry. The middle one, Thomas, works as an engineer in California. And the youngest one Babu is a Professor in the prestigious JNU, New Delhi.

Unfortunately, Miss Kumari left for her heavenly abode on 9th June 1969 after ruling the hearts of many movie-goers.
