Punjabi Writer Surjit Hans

Hans was born on 31 October 1930 in Doaba, Punjab. He passed away on 17 January 2020. He studied English and Philosophy at Panjab University Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur. He worked as a postman at the Heathrow Airport and a bus conductor after moving to Southall, London, in 1965. He then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and worked on Shakespeare's projects. He returned to India in 1973 and worked as a history lecturer in the Department of Guru Nanak Studies at the Guru Nanak Dev University. 

A Reconstruction of Sikh History was his first doctoral thesis on Sikh literature. He translated all the tragedies and thirty-eight plays of Shakespeare into the Punjabi language. He began full-time translating Shakespeare's work into Punjabi, which was assigned to him by Punjabi University, Patiala, after his retirement in 1993. He has also translated the literary pieces Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen, and On the Origin of Species. His original literary works include- Mitti Di Dheri, Gallo, Harijan, Loon Di Dali, Apsara, Pushtan, Imtihan, and Sikh Ki Karan. He was awarded the literary honor Sahitya Akademi Award twice.
