S.P. Jananathan is a prominent Tamil film director and a well-known producer.Iyarkaihis first film came out in 2003.In 2004, this film made him achieve the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.Purampokku Engira Podhuvadamai was produced by his production house, Binary production house. Hewas also a part of the Tamil Film Directors' Union. S.P. Jananathan was the last son born to his parents. They were illiterate and therefore he studied only till 10th standard.
He even didn't know that film institutes existed. As a child, he used to watch MGR films and was fascinated by his films and scripts. He says "MGR films became his reference point when he started making films". He began his film career with joining the well-known editor B Lenin his assistant in all his short films. S.P. Jananathan even worked with late Malayalam director Bharatan, Vincent Selva and KR’s films.
He also believes the best filmmakers originates from Kerala and West Bengal because they follow Marxian ideology. Iyarkai, his first film was based on the idea to have a ship as a background and a woman waiting for her man to return from his voyage. Many thought he was influenced by the Hollywood film Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea. S.P.Jananathan said "Not even in my wildest dreams did I hope to go to Delhi and collect a National Award for his first film from the President APJ Abdul Kalamazoo.
S.P. Jananathan’s second film E came out in 2006.E is the short form of Easwar, the name of the hero. The film is about a young man who lives in a slum and describes how an incident opens the young man's eyes. Jeeva,Nayanthara and Ashish Vidyarthi were the stars. R B Chowdhary,Jeeva's father produced the film. Peranmaihis third film came out in 2009.Jayam Ravi and Ronald Kickinger played the lead role while Vadivelu and Urvashi played supporting roles.
The film was based on 1972 Soviet film ‘The Dawns Here Are Quiet’. The film received mixed reviews. The film was later dubbed in Hindi as Kasam Hindustan and in telugu as Randheera. S P Jananathan'sPurampokku Engira Podhuvadamaia political action thriller film came out in 2015.Arya, Vijay Sethupathi and Karthika Nair were the stars. The film revolves around the importance of capital punishment in a democratic society and collected helpful reviews.
Bhooloham came out in 2015 stared Jayam Ravi and Trisha in the lead roles. It was an Indian Tamil sports-action film but it didn’t go well and received negative responses. S.P. Jananathan said in an interview "Bahubali has inspired me and I also feel there is a strong market for historical movies in Tamil Nadu.S.P. Jananathan will soon be working on his next project.
