'Anandaraj' was born in the Pondicherry district of Tamil Nadu. He was the second son among his eight siblings and his parents had big hopes for him right from his childhood. Anandaraj’s father was a business man and wanted his son to become a police officer.

However, when Anandaraj began to show an interest in acting, his parents wholeheartedly supported his decision and permitted him to join a course at the prestigious ‘M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute’. Soon after his course, he discovered the perils and hardships that one has to face in the film industry.

Anandaraj found it extremely difficult to get a part in a movie, and after a long struggle, he gets a role in the 1988 movie ‘Oruvar Vaazum Aalayam,' in which he plays the role of a crook. Even though his performance was commendable, he failed to gain attention from the audience until his big break- ‘En Thangachi Padichava’, which was also released in the same year. When he felt that he was being stereotyped into the villain character, he accepts scripts that put him in the lead role, such as 'David Uncle,' 'Kaval Nilayam,' 'My India,' etc.

He reverts back to acting in negative roles since he finds them more comfortable to play. Also, the movies that cast him as a protagonist failed at the box office. Anandaraj has committed to works in most of the South Indian film industries and has acted in several languages such as Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam. Apart from South Indian movies, Anandaraj also acted as a villain in a Bollywood movie titled- ‘ Action Jackson’, in which he had to break all clichés and conventions associated with a negative character of a movie.

Anandaraj had to work hard and deconstruct his own acting methods to portray a character in the true manner in which the Director- Prabhu Deva, had wanted him to.
