Karunakaran is an Indian movie actor and writer who has worked in Tamil film Industry. He has appeared in various roles. He debuted in the cinema industry in 2012 with Kalakalappu as Kumar. He is known for
Soodhu Kavvum (played the role of Arumai Pragasam) which got released in 2013. Other films credited to him are Jigarthanda and
Yaamirukka Bayamey. He lived and grew up in
New Delhi, India. His father was a RAW agent. After residing in Delhi, he moved to Trichy with his family. He met
Nalan Kumarasamy, a friend, who is a short filmmaker. He did his schooling from Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya Tiruchirappalli. He did his graduation from Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology& Research Academy (SASTRA) University in chemical engineering.
After the studies had been completed, he took up a job at Accenture and worked as an IT professional. His friend, Nalan asked him to act in his short film named Naalaya Iyakkunar for a reality TV show. Before Nalan had approached him, he had already done roles in mini films made in school. Nalan also had cast him in Naalaya Iyakkunar. He did the part, and it went on to win the first position in that season. He also appeared doing small roles in Sundar C’s ventures. He got his breakthrough 2012 releases Pizza in which he portrayed a friend of Vijay Sethupathi.
The film developed under the direction of
Karthik Subbaraj. After this, Nalan again cast him in Soodhu Kavvum, directorial debut feature film. The film garnered him great reviews as well as made him a recognizable celebrity. He appeared in the song called "Kasu Panam Thuttu" which became a huge success and gave him an overnight fame. It also promoted scripts and stories coming his way. He appeared in Yaamirukka Bayamey (a 2014 Tamil Horror Comedy movie) which garnered him critical acclaim. Critics appreciated his role and the justice that he did to the character.
He played Sharath who according to Times Of India is both “ambivalent and funny.” The Hindu appreciated him with rave review and called his work “exceptional performance.” His talent is well recognised which the list of films he has done in a small period of time proves very well. In 2015 alone, he did five films. He has a huge line of movies which he is still filming such as Jeyikkira Kuthira, Semma Botha Aagatha, Sivaranjiniyum Innum Sila Pengalum,
Kavalai Vendam and Thiri.
