M G Ramachandran was a demigod for his fans. And he lived up to their expectations. A film actor becoming the Chief minister of a state is no small feat and M G Ramachandran achieved this status. His songs also were inspirational and had loads of positive thoughts in them. Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran, affectionately called as MGR by his fans was born on January 17, 1917. MGR also had a brief stint in direction and production. MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for a decade continuously and he passed away while he was the Chief Minister. Being an inspirational philanthropist, he was fondly called as Puratchi Thalaivar. He posthumously was awarded with Bharat Ratna, the topmost civilian Award, given to the worthy citizen in India. 

Born in Nawalapitia near Kandy, MGR commenced a drama group titled Original Boys, after the demise of his father. Eventually he got into the film industry. After the death of his first two wives MGR married V N Janaki, who was also into film fraternity during that time. Initially MGR was a member of DMK and took up rationalist ideology. But later he initiated AIADMK due to issues with DMK. 

MGR entered filmdom in the year 1935 with the Tamil film Sati Leelavati. Initially he worked on action or romance flicks occasionally and it was the 1947 movie Rajakumaari which gave him the big break. This film was penned by another Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi. At that juncture MGR had the credit of giving the most number of hits that include, Enga Veetu Pillai, Nadodi Mannan Click to look into! >> Read More... , and Adimai Pen. The 1956 flick Nadodi Mannan was directed and produced by MGR, and it was a huge hit. The flick Rickshakaran fetched MGR the National Award. 

Once, fellow actor M R Radha shot MGR that ultimately affected his voice permanently. The shooting caused much furor among MGR’sfans. 

MGR concentrated on social progress, giving priority to education, when he became a Chief Minister. He was active with the “Mid-day Meals Scheme” which was a great success. The idea of special buses was also brought forward by him and implemented. Though MGR was criticized for some issues during his tenure as chief minister, he won the hearts of his masses by his exemplary philanthropies.
