S. N. Lakshmi is a late Tamil actress who appeared in films and television serials. She died in February 2012 at the age of 85. She has acted in more than 1500 films and thousands of plays. She was born into a Thevar household as the 13th child of the family, but her childhood was not beautiful, and she left her home when she was 11. Her neighbor who was a popular dancer got her into drama troupe. She then by chance landed at Madras, where she was showed the way to Gemini Studios, which helped her. She then played roles in dramas of veterans like N. S. Krishnan, K. Balachander, etc.
She was an adventurous and a brave woman, who did not hesitate to play stuntman roles for male actors and also is known to have fought a leopard on screen in MGR’s 'Baghdad Thirudan' movie. She played in drama troupes when Nagesh recommended her to K. Balachander for a role in the comedy riot
Server Sundaram that saw Nagesh in the lead role. Incidentally, Lakshmi also played in the same role in the drama version from which the movie was adapted. Impressed by her performances,
Kamal Haasan roped her in to play characters in his movie Thevar Magan, Virumaandi, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Mahanadhi, etc. It is said Kamal Haasan is so confident about her that he has never helped her with dialogues when he is the director because he was sure she could pull off any script with perfection.
She has acted in almost all top actors and her recent films saw her with young actors as well like Silambattam, Kuruvi, Drohi, Pirivom Sandhippom, etc. She was unmarried throughout and loved being alone and loved driving her car when she had free time and always thought marriage was not for her, but loved her brother’s children when they came over to her place. She was essaying poignant roles as Meenakshi’s grandmother in the hit serial ‘Saravanan Meenatchi’ that aired on Vijay TV and Thulasi’s grandmother in ‘
Thendral’ serial on Sun TV when she passed away after a cardiac arrest in February 2012.
