Saranya Ponvannan is one of the best actresses in the last three decades of the Tamil film and TV industry has seen. She first made her entry into the industry by playing the lead role alongside
Kamal Haasan in the blockbuster movie ‘ Nayakan’ directed by
Mani Ratnam. She played a res-cued sex worker and pulled off the role with panache. She is the daughter of Malayalam director A.B Raj and is married to a fellow actor Ponvannan with whom she has two daughters.
Post her marriage she took an eight-year hiatus after essaying lead roles until the beginning of the 90’s. After eight years she started accepting meaty roles that had powerful characters in movies and serials. She is so versatile that she can pull off comedy, emotional and dark roles with panache. She proved her comic sense in the serial, “Veettukku Veedu Looty”. She is now a prominent figure in many movies playing brilliant roles as a mother/sister. She played critically acclaimed roles in movies like ‘
Raam’, ‘Em Magan’, etc. She won the National Award for Best Actress for her role in ‘
Thenmerku Paruvakaatru’ for which she is said to have put in an unimaginable amount of hard work, including working under the scorching sun of the countryside and even plow the fields.
She has won many more awards including five Filmfare awards and one Tamil Nadu state award for her role in ‘Em Magan’ opposite Nasser. She has also been nominated for several Filmfare awards, more recently winning the award for her role in ‘
Neerparavai’ and also was nominated for her role as Udhayanidhi Stalin’s mother in the movie Oru Kal Oru Kannadi. She has most recently played mother-in-law for the first time in the movie ‘
Pappali’ and also plays a role in Dhanush-starter ‘Velaiyilla Pattadhaari’. A fashion design student during her formative years, Saranya intends to open a fashion design institute under her name very soon.
