Karthik (Singer)

Karthik is an Indian playback singer. He was born November 7, 1980, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Karthik has sung in many languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Hindi. He is known to be a very versatile singer. In the Tamil language, he has sung for over 1000 songs, his highest for any language followed by Telugu in which he has sung over 500 songs. Karthik had the love for music since his childhood days. He is trained in Carnatic Music and had got trained for it since long.

He was a regular participant of IIT Madras fest Saarang. Karthik always wanted to work with A.R. Rahman and his dream came true when one of his friends Srinivas, who was constantly working with Rahman recommended Karthik to Rahman.

Rahman was in need of new vocalists at that time for a song in the film Pukar. Karthik bagged this song and sung for it later. He has sung for some brilliant music directors including Ilaiyaraja, A.R. Rahman, Hamsalekha, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and Harris Jeyaraj. One of his songs in Tamil, Ennaku Oru Girlfriend from the film Boys, was one of the biggest hit at the time of its release. It became very popular with the audiences. He many blockbuster songs credited to him in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu languages.

He sang the song Behene De for the film Raavan in 2010. Behene De is considered as one of the best songs in his career. He also sang the Tamil and Telugu versions of the same song. He also sang for an advertisement of Coca-Cola company and Prince Jewellery ads.

Karthik is a talented singer and a music composer in the Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu film industry. Known for his songs in different languages such as Malayalam, Oriya, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, he has worked on thousands of songs. Born on November 7th, 1980, in a Tamil family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, he was trained in Carnatic music during his school days. In college, he was part of a band and performed in different fests including those of IIT Madras and Oxford Engineering College. He also studied cinematography in Mumbai.

He entered into the music industry with the help of a close friend's cousin - Srinivas, who is also a playback singer and has worked with Karthik's childhood hero, the music maestro, A.R. Rahman, with whom he worked for a year and a half and studied audio engineering. He started his career with singing in a movie called Pukar, for which he was recommended to A.R. Rahman by Srinivas. He got this big break while he was shooting a song as a backing vocalist for One 2 Ka 4. Karthik further worked with A.R. Rahman when the latter asked him to sing a song for his film Star called Nenthukitten.

Followed by, he started working with Ilayaraja, Mani Sharma, Hamsalekha, Devi Sri Prasad, Vidyasagar, and Harris Jeyaraj. He also came up with an album named “Music I Like.” He also sang the title song of Kamal Hassan’s movie Anbe Sivam. He also acted in the remake of Case No. 18/9 along with Nagaraj Kote as his son. His most famous songs are Kotha Bangaru Lokam (Nijanga Nenena), Happy Days, "Badhulu Thochani," "Manase Guvvai," "Oh Oh My Friend," "Yeduta nilichindi choodu," "Meghama," "Yevvaro."

His other popular songs include "Behka" from Ghajini, "Ava Enna" from Vaaranam Aayiram and the title track from Unnale Unnale. He worked on commercials for brands like Coca-Cola and Prince Jewellery. He has also worked in feature films and period films like Aravaan, Tamilselvanum Thaniyar Anjalum for Courier Boy Kalyan and Okkadine.

He has been awarded five Filmfare Awards (South) for - Oru Maalai, Arey Rey, Nijanga Nenena, Hasili Fisili and Usure Poguthey. Further on he was awarded Globus Style Awards,Mirchi Music Awards South-Best Male Playback Singer,Amrita Film Awards ,Vijay Music Awards, Asiavision Awards -Best Male Playback Singer, Tamil Isaiaruvi Music Awards, CineMAA Awards, Nandi Award for Best Male Playback Singer, TSR TV9 National film awards and ITFA Best Male Playback Award.
