Achamillai Gopi, also known as Gopalakrishnan is an Indian film and television actor, singer, and dubbing artist. He was born in the small town Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. His father M. Venkatraman was a railway officer and his mother was Meenakshi. He is related to singer Vani Jairam as he is the nephew of the renowned singer. He had an interest in art and culture from an early age. He followed the paths of scholars like Shri Neela-Kunjumani, and Shri Mala Chandrashekhar. He has made appearances in more than 1000 Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam films and TV series. He acquired training under Guru Shrimaan Kumbakonam Nataraj Iyer. After that, he initiated his music troop and named it '
Gopi Krishna' in 1970. Later he got the opportunity to work with well-known composer Ilaiyaraaja. He also sang songs for music directors like Narasimhan, Ravindran, and V Kumar.
He received an offer from music composer Mr. Joshua Rajan to share the stage with playback singer T.M. Soundararajan. Apart from this, he has collaborated with various music directors. He became the lead singer for the music troop of Mr. Shankar Ganesh for a period of eight years. Afterward, he sang for musicians like Shri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam,
Malaysia Vasudevan, and Mr. Gagai Amaran. In addition to this, he worked with
Sirkazhi Govindarajan, A.L. Raghavan, Mano, P. Susheela, and
Jamuna Rani. He has been running his orchestra with a group of 24 people. He has done more than 10000 shows with his band. In 1972, he started working in the Accountant General's (AG) office. He worked there for three years, and it was a stepping stone in his life as celebrities like Mr. K. Balachander, Mr. G. Balasubramaniam, and Mr. Gokulnath were working in the same office.
As Gopi used to perform in cultural events organized in the AG offices from all over India, he got noticed by these directors and writers. His singing and dramatics skills were appreciated by all of them. He started his acting on the small screen from the TV series Periya Veetu Thinnai in 1975. He received an award for best actor in C.S.R.S.B. organized by the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran. The judges were Mr. Gopali and Y.G. Parthasarathy, who suggested him to work in TV series. He started his journey with Doordarshan Kendra and went on to work in 500 different TV serials. Some of them were directed and produced by production houses like Kavithalaya productions, AVM Productions, Krishnaswamy Associates, Jayashree Pictures, and Abhinaya Creations.
He has been a part of the South Indian Dubbing Union for more than thirty years. He is currently the Vice-President of the Union. He has lent his voiceovers for actors like
Bhanu Chander, Govindha,
Anupam Kher, Rahman, and Nagarjuna. He has also worked as a dubbing or voiceover artist for English movies such as Titanic, and The Lost World. He was launched on the Silver Screen by K. Balachandran, in the movie
Thillu Mullu (1981) where he worked along with Rajnikanth. After that, he appeared in various movies including Achamillai Achamillai (1984), Paddikadha Pannayar (1985), Nallavan (1988), Parthal Pasu (1988), Idhaya Vaasal (1991), and Punnaagai Poove (2003). He is married to Shobana Gopi, and they have two children named Aishwray and Ajitha Gopi.
