Vijaya Bapineedu is a South Indian magazine editor, screenplay writer, producer and director who worked in the Telugu film industry. He was born on 22nd September 1936. Vijaya’s birth name is Gutta Bapineedu Chowdhury. He is the son of Seetha Rama Swamy and Leelvathy. He was born in the Chatappari Village near Eluru in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree inMAthematics from C. R. R. College in Eluru. Then he joined the Public Health Department. Bapineedu had a keen interest in writing and after joining the P. H. D. he wrote several detective stories. After marriage he took on his wife’s name and continued to write stories. He shifted to Madras in hopes of publishing his stories and earning fame and fortune in the process. Unfortunately, the writers and publishers he met turned him down. So he went ahead with his backwards integration plan by establishing two monthly magazines named Vijaya and Bommerilu.

While his monthlies attracted readers, Bapineedu got his first breakthrough when Phalguna Arts production produced a feature film called Jagath Jatteelu based on one of his stories. Bapineedu also lent the story for Harutha Kulu Devanthakull and many more. By then, Bapineedu had established the Shyam Prasad Arts film production house where he wished to dub the Tamil movie into Telugu under the title Chedine Adhari but the notion was rejected by the South Indian Film Charter of Commerce, so he named it Yavvanam Kateesindhi instead. Bapineedu also produced many movies like Rambah Urvasi Menaka, Bommerillu, Bottu Kaatuka, Prema Poojari, Vijaya, Rudra Thandavam and Jeegantalu. Bapineedu made his directorial debut with the Telugu film Dabbu Dabbu Dabbu in 1981.

After this, he directed films like Patnam Vachina Pativaratu in 1982, Maga Maharaju in 1983, Mahanagaramloo Mayagadu in 1984, Hero in 1984, Bharyamani in 1984, Maharaju in 1985, Krishangaradu in 1985, Magadheerudu in 1988, Sumangali in 1989, Zoo Laka Taka in 1989, Mahajniki Maradi Pillai in 1990, Gang Leader in 1991, Valu Jada Tolu Beltu in 1992, Seetapathi Chalo Tirupathi in 1992, Big Boss in 1995, Family in 1996 and Kodukulu in 1998. Bapineedu is the only other producer to have worked with megastar Chiranjeevi in six movies which are Maga Maharaju, MAhanagarmloo Mayagadu, Magadheerudu, Khaidi No. 786 and Gang Leader. His last film as a producer was Big Boss which flopped big time at the box office.
