Previously it was called as Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actor.In 1968, the State Awards for cinema started this award and then it was known as Bharat Award for the Best Actor. Then its name was changed to Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actor in 1975. Till 1974 the winners were honoured with a figurine and certificate and from 1975 onwards they were presented with a Silver Lotus known as Rajat Kamal.Uttam Kumar received the first Award for his Bengali film Chiriyakhana and Anthony Firingee in 1968.
