1. Do Bigha Zameen

The film Do Bigha Zameen is based on a Bengali poem, Dui Bigha Jomi. It was written in 1953 by Rabindranath Tagore. It is about a village. It is hit by drought. After several years of famine, the area finally gets rain. The farmers are now happy. Shambhu is the main character of the film. He has a land of two bighas. It is the only means of livelihood for his family. He has borrowed money from a wealthy man named Harnam Singh. He asks him to sell his land to pay his debt. He does not want to sell his land. He sells all his household. Lastly, Shambhu could not pay his loan, and his land was auctioned.

2. Bandini

4. Sujata

The film Sujata is adapted from a Bengali short story by Subodh Ghosh of the same name. Adheer is a Brahmin young man. Sujata is an untouchable woman. They both fall in love. This film shows the fight of Mahatma Gandhi against the untouchables and Chandalika’s myth in Hinduism. It criticizes this practice in the country. Upen and Charu are Brahmins. They adopt Sujata. Upen is acceptable. But his wife cannot accept that their adopted child is untouchable. One day, Sujata saves her mother’s life. She then takes her.

5. Yahudi

The film Yahudi is about history. Elijah is the son of a jeweler named Ezra. Emmanuel is a Buttler. When Ezra leaves, Elijah is upset. Brutus is the Governor of Rome. He makes an announcement.
