Digital Screening Of Short Films For The Film Festivals

Short films have been a specialty of film students or a derivative of many big production houses for over a decade ago. But the scene is varying from independent viewing to live streaming on popular social media pages. Short films appeals to several buffs of different age groups and professionals.

Recently, the Bangalore International Short Film Festival 2015 saw several short films being showcased, and has taken things to a higher notch. The organizers have launched a number of award-winning pieces online, which appears to be a groundbreaking ingenuity in the country.

The 18-minute film entitled Playgrounds, which was penned and helmed by Pallavi MD and Shamik Sen Gupta Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , is a tale about childhood from a world of inconsistent priorities and choices that are not black or white – but has a color of a cement, which is gray. It was released in both Kannada and Hindi and has been screened for couple of times in many film festivals in India and abroad. Pallavi said, "Blame a lack of revenue model, appropriate resources or viewership limitations, but making a short film is still a challenging task in India. Only those who are passionate about the art form actually end up carrying it forward."

The digital media and advanced technology have made filmmaking simpler but short films are still entitled according to the content, portrayal of characters and the art of storytelling.

Director Pranav Harihar Sharma is feeling optimistic on his eight-minute film entitled Watermelon. The film that became a part of many film festivals around the world is a thriller film that revolves around the three characters. According to the director, the idea of short filmmaking is increasingly progressing in the country. He thanked the celebrated actors and the directors for backing the genre.

He calls it unfortunate that online film was usually screened late in a country that is full of unusual story. He also finds it tricky yet interesting. He adds that making short films can provide hands-on training to the beginners, raise funds and assist in unfolding the untold stories in the society.

A director of the festival, Anand Varadaraj Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , said that they have received more than 3,000 entries globally this 2015, from Finland to Karnataka. But since they find it hard to project all the chosen films in the span of three days, they decided to do a digital screening. He also finds it encouraging to automatically transits creative pieces to those who live in far places.
