And yet another book becomes a Hollywood flick. Director Michael Cuesta brings Vince Flynn’s novel American Assassin on screen with Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp. The performance of the cast salvages what is otherwise a cliché spy thriller.

Plot:

Mitch Rapp’s life is shaken when his girlfriend is killed in a terrorist attack, on the day he proposed her. Months later, Rapp establishes contact with the terror cell and is invited over to their base where he plans to kill the mastermind. However, he is denied vengeance as a CIA team ambushes the group. CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy, played by Sanaa Lather, then recruits Rapp and places him with Black Ops cell Orion under Stan Hurley, played by Michael Keaton Michael Keaton is an American actor. He was born M >> Read More... , with hopes of channeling his vengeful spirit into an asset. At a time when a rogue agent called Ghost, played by Taylor Kitsch   Early life: -Taylor Kitsch is a model and actor >> Read More... , plans a nuclear attack against the U.S. with help from Iranian hardliners will Rapp’s unquenched thirst for vengeance be the team’s downfall or will he find closure?

Analysis:

Regardless of whether you are a Mitch Rapp fan or not, you can’t help but be overwhelmed by the number of clichés in the movie. Yet, it is not a terrible movie. The transitions are dynamic and actors performed well.

Star Performances:

O’Brien plays Mitch Rapp with sincerity but lacks energy. Keaton justifies his role as the mentor. Kitsch makes his presence known.

What’s there?

 a) The opening sequence grabs your attention.

b) The training sequences between O’Brien and Keaton keeps you engaged with the long-standing debate of letting emotions guide oneself and controlling them.

c) O’Brien’s performance is commendable. He compels the audience to cheer for him right from the moment he wakes up from his flashback of his girlfriend’s death.

d) Entertainments, once you ignore the troupes, the action sequences are plenty in number, each one as thrilling as the other.

What’s not there?

a) Originality. The Good Day Gone Bad, the Vengeful Lover, the Rogue Agent, the Mentor, the Islamist Extremists, the Bad Iranians, the Not Bad Iranian; the American Assassin leaves no troupe unturned.

b) Some book fans may be put up how the movie deviates from the book.

c) The plot seems to reward Rapp for letting his base instincts control him despite preaching the contrary.

Verdict: You may give it a pass if you’re not a hardcore Mitch Rapp series fan, and are anti-cliché. But if you just want some good old entertainment then enjoy.
