Plot

The film’s protagonists are Collin, played by Daveed Diggs, and his best friend Miles, played by Rafael Casal. The film has been set in the backdrop of Oakland. In the film, Collin is serving the last two days of his probationary period when he witnesses a policeman shooting a fleeing suspect in the back. He does not report the incident because he does not want to risk going to prison again, but the memory of that day torments him every day. After serving time in jail for assaulting a drunken customer at the bar where Collin worked as a bouncer, Collin attempts to make a fresh start and stay away from crime and shady businesses. His resolve to stay out of trouble was threatened by Miles, who takes Collin with him to a gun sale. Collin is troubled by Miles’ recklessness. Although Miles is not a person of color, he and Collin have grown up together. Miles is especially troubled by the gentrification of Oakland by people who look like him but in his view, are not like him because Miles was born and raised in Oakland. While Collin tries his best to stay out of trouble, Miles lashes out at the changes happening in his city. The film follows Collin and Miles as they navigate their friendship in a volatile atmosphere.

Star Performance

Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal deliver stellar performances. Diggs gives a heartfelt portrayal of a man struggling to survive in a world that is rigged against people of color. While we see Casal completely immerse himself in his character of a disturbed, volatile individual. The female leads, Janina Gavankar and Jasmine Cephas Jones, also give powerful performances.

Analysis

“Blindspotting” portrays the inherent fear the people of color in America have, knowing that the criminal justice system was rigged against them. It illustrates how at any moment, even one benign mistake has the potential to ruin your life. The film also depicts how people are often surrounded by people like Miles, brash and volatile, who would not hesitate to put their close ones in harm’s way.

What’s There?

  • A beautiful story about an individual accessing his life after getting out of prison who comes to the realization that his best friend might not be the best fit for his dream of a nice, quiet life.
  • A stellar cast with powerful performances
  • The film explores the problems people of color face in America.
  • The plotline is well-executed

What’s Not There?

  • The female characters were not given enough screen time even though they give powerful performances.

Verdict

“Blindspotting” is a film that perfectly portrays several social issues, such as the discrimination people of color face, the police violence against them, and a criminal justice system that does not support them. The film also explores how we are often surrounded by reckless, irresponsible people who would not hesitate to cause trouble. The film explores the friendship between Collin, a person of color, who is cautious and paranoid and wants to lead a new life after getting out of prison, and Miles, a white man, who, with his irresponsible actions, keeps putting Collin in harm’s way. The film follows how their life, friendship, and relationships change after Collin’s release and Miles’ outbursts. The film is perfect for drama, comedy enthusiasts.
