Plot

The film is the biography of Freddie Mercury, played by Rami Malek. In the film we see Farrokh Bulsara transform into Freddie Mercury. The film follows Freddie Mercury’s music career from becoming a part of the band Queens, to subsequently breaking up the band to become a solo artist, and ultimately reconciling with his band to perform at the Live Aid concert in 1985. The film also shows how he struggled with his sexuality, and how being fame, wealth, and a toxic homosexual partner corrupted his mind. The film shows how he regretted his selfish decisions, and gained his former band-mates’ forgiveness while struggling with an AIDS diagnosis. The film’s final act is a rendition of Queen’s spectacular performance at the Live Aid concert.

Star Performance

Rami Malek gave a stellar performance as Freddie Mercury. He personified Mercury’s electric energy during concert scenes. He truly embodies Mercury’s passion, his drive, and his love for his music. Malek has also given a touching performance as a man struggling with his sexuality in the 1970s.

Analysis

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a spectacular biographical musical film, but it often feels too glossary because we do not see any creative process that led to the creation of Mercury’s super-hits.

What’s There?

• Stellar performance by Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury

• The film features Queen’s iconic songs

• The film shows Mercury’s confusion and his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality

What’s Not There?

• Even though Mercury’s sexuality was an important part of his life and his career, the film seems to shy away from focusing on and exploring that aspect of his life

• The film feels cursory and feels like a compilation of milestones of Mercury’s career, and never slows down to show a semblance of his normal life or the creative process behind his song-making

Verdict

Rami Malek’s performance in the film is spectacular, and Queen’s songs are electric. Even though the film has some flaws, Queen’s fans should definitely watch it. The film would also be a good watch for biography and drama enthusiasts.
