Plot

It is one of his most challenging and defining trials. Churchill must endure his darkest times, rally a nation, and attempt to alter the course of world history as the unstoppable Nazi forces sweep across Western Europe and the threat of invasion looms. He must do this while contending with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his party plotting against him.

Star Performance

Gary Oldman brought Churchill to life by perfectly capturing his mannerisms of Churchill. He infuses his performance with powerful moments of frustration and despair, with touches of mischievous charm. The transformation of Oldman's appearance to look exactly like Winston Churchill is with prosthetics.

Analysis

Joe Wright's beautifully directed film focused on the plight of Churchill during those three weeks in May 1940. Darkest Hour builds real tension and explores how unpopular Churchill was, even within his party. The narrative structure makes it less of a biopic about a great political leader and more of a historical drama that attempts to capture the specific personality of the leader for a single, pivotal event. The film establishes itself as populist entertainment by relying on sentimentality and romanticized nostalgia. Despite the alleged tear-jerking moments and rousing speeches, the complexities of the pivotal historical moment remain unexplored. The film is entertaining due to the electrifying performance by Gary Oldman and the intriguing aesthetic signatures of Joe Wright.

It is a fascinating movie about Winston Churchill as a Prime Minister, and able to witness his determination to inspire a nation to rise and fight the Fascists that threaten to take over their island.
