Plot: Laurel Hester has several credits to her profession as New Jersey sleuth. But, one fine day, Laurel is diagnosed with terminal cancer that is slowly eating her away. Laurel decides to leave her retirement benefits to her live-in Stacie Andree. The local officials do not allow her to pass on her benefits to her partner. Dane Wells, her colleague in the department, comes to her aid. Also, a social activist by name Steven Goldstein is by her side to get her justice.

There is a very easy chemistry that works out between the actors Page and Julianne Moore. But, the director has restricted their performances. The movie seems to derive ideology from a totally different period. The movie happens to be a tribute to the actor in Laurel Hester. Actress Moore, an Oscar winner does not seem to fit into the police uniform well. The supporting roles in the movie are not very impeccable. Steve Carell, the social activists, seems to prod forward the idea of gay marriage. The audiences are left with the stark realization that good things need not happen even when the cause is good. The sub-story seems to distract the audiences from focusing on the good aspect of the movie. Marriage equality seems to be one of the movie’s explorations. The directors seem to have left the audiences to assume that only governments oppose gay marriage. But, there is a lot beneath the superficial aspects, and the movie fails to project those. The director should realize that it is not a cakewalk when it comes to dealing with such sensitive issues. The movie happens to picture one of the moving moments ever witnessed by America.

Verdict: The movie is worth it when it comes to spending your weekend meaningfully.
