Plot

"Indignation" centers on Marcus Messner, a working-class Jewish kid from New Jersey who wins a scholarship to attend an exclusive university in Ohio in the 1950s. Marcus encounters a difficult college life in this new city with noisy roommates and cultural disaffection. Later, in college he develops romantic feelings for Olivia Hutton, a young lady with a disturbed background. After a cute romantic chemistry, both of them have to leave their university, which later leads to a melancholic ending.

Star Performance

Logan Lerman delivers an emotional and strong performance as Marcus Messner, portraying his inner conflicts with quite intensity. His chemistry with Sarah Gadon adds depth to the story. Both of the actors were cast perfectly for their roles.

Analysis

James Schamus deserves his share of praise for directing "Indignation". Schamus definitely did justice to the novel by bringing it to life and executing it well. The cinematography by Christopher Blauvelt was very good and made it a delightful cinematic experience. Acting by Logan Lerman and Sarah Gadon felt heart-warming and connected emotionally. The film goes through tragedy, love, repression, and many other feelings to be experienced, but the sad ending of the film may be a letdown.

What's There?

● Beautiful cinematography with 1950s nostalgia

● Heart-touching acting by both Logan and Sarah

● Amazing direction, which brought the novel to the screen with each detail

What's Not There?

● The film is a bit slow paced, which leads to distancing from the characters

Verdict

Despite the film's slow pace, it emotionally connects with the viewers and definitely leaves a lasting impression. With strong performances and narrative, it gives a reflection on self-identity and love. The film may feel disconnected in between, but the amazing cinematic experience takes you through 1950s America, which is a visual treat. Overall, it is definitely a delightful watch.
