The plot expands in such a way that it throws light on the experiences of a German man named John Rabe. John Rabe held membership in the Nazi Party. He used his influence to raise a safety zone for Chinese who were being butchered by the Japanese during the late 1930’s. Following the defeat of the Chinese in the Battle of Nanking, the mass killing of the Chinese was carried out by the Japanese.

Plot: The plot goes back in time to 1937. A business person John Rabe is the central character in the story. John Rabe and his wife Dora are residing in Nanking where John is the head of Siemens Company. The plot opens up with John Rabe in Nanking, China. He is the head of the big company. He has to hand over the authority of the company to the successor and return to the German capital of Berlin. But, John is reluctant as he has become accustomed to the culture in China. Moreover, he feels that he would lose his authority in the company if he is shifted to his native Germany. As a twist in the movie, the Japanese have already captured Shanghai in China. Now, shells are dropped on Nanking.

A brave John Rabe decides to offer refuge to Chinese population in his company premises. John Rabe follows Oskar Schindler’s trail and negotiates with Japanese military to get a safety zone for his Chinese employees. But, much to his horror, John Rabe finds out that Japanese are planning to infiltrate the safety zone. John Rabe realizes that the situation spells doom for him and many Chinese people around. He has to use his wit and save several innocent souls. The movie has portrayed the mass killing of the Chinese by the Japanese in a realistic manner. But, there could have been added emotion in those scenes depicting the slaughter of the Chinese. The movie is very lengthy for words, and it lacks a proper shape. Verdict: The Western world knows very little about the happenings in China.

Verdict: The movie is worthwhile if you are curious to know about the historical war in China.
