The movie is loosely based on Jamie Reidy’s book “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman”.

PLOT

The story is set in the mid-90s in the USA. Jamie is a charming guy, who can effortlessly romance with ladies. He is a budding salesman for pharmaceutical sales and struggling to sell a new drug Viagra.

On the other hand, Maggie is a waitress, equally smart but suffering from the dreadful Parkinson’s disease. She is an artistic person who clicks pictures, makes videos, and helps elders.

They both share similar phobia for commitment and never get involved except sex. Jamie tries to manage his work, his annoying brother and relationship with Maggie.

They both start feeling love for each other. But, at the same time, Maggie’s health goes worse. After this, less pharmaceutical wars has shown and more information on Parkinson’s patients.

Maggie’s suffering, involvement with patients and Jamie’s realization about his career, love. All this ups-downs in their relationship winds up at a conventional note; they confess their love and Jamie decides to join medical school while staying with Maggie.

ANALYSIS

This is a typical American romantic comedy-drama, which loses the plot after sometime. We see film goes towards Jamie’s career interests and cuts off in between and starts looking at Maggie’s Parkinson’s disease and seriousness of it.

It is predictable after a point when we get to know about her constant hospital check-ups, which was not shown in detail. But meanwhile, Jamie’s struggle and funny incidents at his workplace continue and too fast to remember everything.

The filmmaker has shown too much career struggle of Jamie and audience can easily lose grip of it. At the end only sex, nudity scenes are continuously there. Screenplay, music is average.

Most of the things have dragged in this film, like unnecessary dialogues, both Jamie & Maggie’s chemistry after a point. The story loses it’s content and gets into the darkness of that disease.

STAR PERFORMANCES

Anna Hathaway’s brilliant performance as Maggie is too good. Jake Gyllenhaal acted naturally in few comedy scenes. Josh Gad Joshua IIan Gad was born on February 23, 1981.  Hi >> Read More... as Jamie’s brother was not funny and unnecessary involvement in the film.

WHAT’S THERE?

Anna Hathaway as a Parkinson’s patient, which changes whole focus of the film and portrays the seriousness of it. Forced to concentrate on the fantasy of an ideal connection/love between sex-partners.

WHAT’S NOT THERE?

No sufficient grip over the screenplay and dialogues to engage the audience for long. Interesting characters are missing. Nothing about adapted book and involvement of it misguided the film.

VERDICT

It is an average romantic comedy. Fan of these famous actors can go for it. Plot and characters in the film are predictable and repetitive. This is disappointing to watch something like this from director/screenwriter Edward Zwick Edward Zwick is an American director and also a Pr >> Read More... , who made good films before - Defiance, Blood Diamond.
