Plot

The film’s protagonist is Mulan, played by Liu Yifei. As a child, Mulan had immense Chi and was an adventurous girl but this was not liked by her mother Li, played by Rosalind Chao, who felt that Mulan would not be able to get a good marriage offer of it continued. So, Mulan’s father Zhou, played by Tzi Ma, told Mulan to hide her Chi and lead life as an ordinary girl because the society would not accept her. When Mulan was of a marriageable age, she went to the matchmaker, but their meeting is spoiled when Mulan breaks the teapot while trying to keep a spider away from her sister. When the nation is attacked by the Rourans headed by Bori Khan, played by Jason Scott, who is accompanied by the witch Xianniang, played by Gong Li, the emperor orders that one man from each family should join the army. Since Zhou had no sons, he would have to join the army with his crippled leg, but Mulan runs away with her father’s armor and sword and joins the army pretending to be a man. The film follows Mulan as she trains in the army while trying to hide her identity, fights alongside men, and eventually decides to be her true self.

Star Performance

Liu Yifei delivers a good performance in the film. She is also good during the action scenes and uses the sword well. Tzi Ma, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li also give good performances.

Analysis

The film has elaborate sets and costumes, accompanied by stunning animated visuals and action scenes. The inspirational story of Mulan becoming a warrior who is ultimately accepted by the society is heartwarming.

What’s There?

• Stellar performances, visuals, sets, and costumes

• The film tells the inspiring story of an ancient Chinese female warrior

What’s Not There?

• The film loses some momentum while portraying the war and the plot to eliminate the emperor

• Viewers who have seen the 1998 film would definitely miss the talking dragon who accompanied Mulan because the live-action remake has eliminated the dragon to maintain realism

Verdict

The film is a good film to watch with children because it is inspiring, entertaining, and vibrant. The film has a good storyline, visuals, and action. So, the film would be a good watch for action, fantasy, and adventure genre enthusiasts.
