Plot

The film’s lead Hercule Poirot, a Belgian Detective in the 1930s sets off on a train journey to London to solve another case. He gets on a Luxury Passenger Train named ‘The Orient Express’. Poirot tired of his investigations is delving into the dilemma of his own life however he shakes the thoughts away and carries on with his voyage. On the Train Poirot meets a Young Businessman named Ratchett who seems concerned about his safety and knowing the identity of Poirot asks him to protect him while they travel on the train together. Poirot unsure of a very suspicious Ratchett refuses to be his bodyguard and walks away from the offer. Later that night Poirot hears voices from Ratchett’s compartment right next to him and decides to go check on him only to find out that Ratchett has been murdered. Poirot follows after the killer who escapes wearing a red kimono but to no avail. The killer escapes as the train suddenly derails and comes to a standstill on a snow-covered mountain. As the train awaits track repairs and rescue, Poirot takes on the task of solving Ratchett’s Murder on the Orient Express with each passenger as a suspect in the crime. The Evidence at the murder scene leads to a few clues in the case which suggests a supposed connection with some of the passengers onboard. Will Hercule Poirot unravel the murder? What was the intent of the murderer behind killing Ratchett? Is everything as it seems to be or is Poirot being misled?

Star Performance

Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot brings life to the Novel Character and makes it relatable and real. His clever thought process of connecting the dots and coming to conclusions is awe-inspiring. Each crew member does justice to the narrative and plays an equally important role in the story timeline. Someone as simple as the butler also plays a crucial role in the story as it unfolds. Every performance could have a stand-alone plot to it and shine through brilliantly. Johnny Depp’s short yet effective role as Ratchett leaves a lot of loose ends for the audience to wonder who was Ratchett and why would someone want to kill him. The cast delivers beyond your expectations.

Analysis

To adapt a classic novel which is a people’s favourite can be quite a task and the most important role in doing so is that of Hercule Poirot. The detective loses himself in investigations and cannot find peace until he solves a case. Someone who would put his own life on trial to find out the black and white from the grey areas of a crime. But is everything always truly Black and White? Is all crime always wrongful? Is all justice only truly served through righteousness? These important grey areas in a crime setting are truly highlighted in Murder on the Orient Express. When a world-class detective struggles with seeing beyond Right and Wrong, you know it makes for a spine-chilling, exciting movie with various twists and turns. Michael Green’s Screenplay does justice to the Mystery flick and makes it subtle and easy for the audience.

What's there?

You can expect tons of suspense and Mystery in this Crime Investigation universe of Agatha Christie’s books and movie adaptations.
Poirot’s cases are adapted into many more movies and are a mind-opening treat for the audience.
The film has the perfect balance of curiosity of motive and human emotions and grief.

What's not there?

Interesting as ever, the narrative however is a slow-building one.
It progresses slowly and gradually and takes time till you can start connecting the dots of who killed Ratchett.
As the film takes you through the lives of the passengers it may seem unnecessary in the beginning until the relevance of these personal stories begin to connect to the climax.

Verdict

For Murder Mystery Lovers and Crime Fanatics who love a good Detective Adventure, Murder on the Orient Express is a great movie to begin with. This classic tale has a set of unexpected plot twists and unfolds most beautifully.
