Plot

The film’s protagonist is Violet, played by Sanaa Lathan, a successful advertising executive. Violet’s mother, Paulette, played by Lynn Whitfield, always tried to make Violet perfect and straightened her natural hair from a young age for this purpose. As an adult, Violet still believes her mother’s words that she must stay perfect and thus puts painstaking effort into being perfect. Violet had been dating Clint, played by Ricky Whittle, for two years and expected him to propose to her on her birthday, but he got her a dog instead. When Violet brought this up with him, he said that he felt like he didn’t know her because she was always trying too hard to be perfect. They break up after their argument. The film follows Violet’s relationship with her hair and with others and how her notion of perfection undergoes a sea change.

Star Performance

Sanaa Lathan gives a spectacular performance. In one scene where she is standing in front of the mirror, Lathan portrays every emotion Violet is going through in her complicated relationship with her hair and how she learns to let go and be herself in those few moments. The rest of the star cast also gives strong performances.

Analysis

“Nappily Ever After” is a powerful film relaying the important message of embracing our natural attributes instead of viewing them as flaws. It empowers African-American women to embrace their Afro and their culture instead of trying to change themselves to fit in with others.
