Plot

November Criminals is a movie that revolves around the lives of two young adults named Addison and Phoebe after they experience something tragic together.  The movie starts with an opening scene showing us several students who will soon leave for college. Addison and Phoebe decide that it is probably the time to profess their love for each other before parting their ways. On their way to Phoebe's place, they encounter their familiar friend, Kevin. Later, they get to know that Kevin has been shot dead.

Addison was pretty close to Kevin and is pretty shocked about his death and that too in broad daylight. Addison makes it his life mission to find out Kevin’s killer. Phoebe supports him all the way and they unravel some pretty dark secrets about Kevin. That makes them question if Kevin was a victim or a member of a drug gang. Addison’s past also stands in his way, especially his mother’s early death.

Will they ever find the killer?

Will Addison ever get over his tragic past and start anew?

Star Performances

November Criminals gives us a glimpse into the lives of two troubled teenagers, who are trying to navigate the mystery of a friend’s shocking killing. One of the protagonists, Ansel Elgort as Addison, has outdone himself. Addison was a complicated character with a tragic backstory and trauma from Kevin’s death, but his portrayal by Ansel was exceptional. Ansel Elgort stole the show with his efforts that could be seen on screen.

Analysis

November Criminals can easily be classified as a cliché young adult thriller but with a twist in the storyline. In an attempt to give a fresh perspective to the audience, this film has faltered in many places. Initially, the entire plot revolves around Kevin’s death, which seems prolonged and forced after the first half. No other subplot is introduced to keep the audience engaged and intrigued.

Also, when the entire mystery of Kevin’s death is disclosed, many questions are left unanswered. Was his death necessary and serve any purpose, are some of the questions that cause bewilderment to the viewers. The one factor that saved the day for this movie was its casting choice. From Kevin to Addison, they were phenomenal. All in all, just like any other piece, this movie had its flaws and merits.

What’s There?

• A different take is tried on cliché young adult movies.

• Tries to blend in the plot's elements of romance and mystery.

What’s not There?

• The storyline had major room for improvement.

• The screenplay and plot execution could have been way better if some more thought had been put into it.

Verdict

November Criminals attempts to bring a change on screen but fails miserably. It doesn’t serve any purpose and the title too isn’t justified.  An effort is made to alter the way people perceive cliché movies. This movie can be watched once, for the sake of entertainment.
