The movie ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ went on screens in 2012.  The movie is about a musician named Rodriguez, who was widely popular in South Africa.  But suddenly he went off the limelight and rumors spread that he had died.  Two among his fanatics went on a mission to find him.

The Rock Star Rodriguez came into prominence during the 1970’s.  Famous producers recognized Way back in the latter half of 1960's, his talent.  The two producers were taken in by his enchanting music and excellent lyrics.  The producers made an album out of his melodies, but the album in fact failed.  But his reproduced recording made reentry into South Africa, which was full of discrimination.  During next twenty years, Rodriguez rose to meteoric fame. But, he had disappeared with the thought that he had failed.  The movie is a revelation of what happened to Rodriguez as he disappeared from the limelight.

The movie is indeed a real story, but that does not make any difference.  The movie’s director Malik Bendjelloul moves ahead with terrific accuracy. Fans are pinned to their seats although it is just about a musician who never rose to fame. This is due to another element present in the story. The element is a surprise that comes out in the climax.

The plot revolves around a music journo who endeavored to solve the mystery of disappearance. Then, at a juncture, Rodriguez learns that he was not a flop. But, very late in his life, the truth comes as a bolt from the blue.

There is plenty of melody in the movie, and there is a heartrending revelation of Rodriguez, who learned about his fame a bit too late.  Except for drug references and some language, the movie is a moving one.
