A Chilean mine disaster of 2010 is the inspiration for the movie The 33. When 33 men are entrapped in a collapsing mine, it calls for an interesting tale.  Let’s see how the movie has turned out in the big screen.

Plot

The 33 is a real life incident of 33 miners who were caught in an unsteady mine for over 68 days. This incident happened in San Jose in Chile, and the survival process, and the rescue mission is shown in the movie. With very little hope of food and communication, what do these 33 men do?

Star Performances

There is an ensemble of an international cast in the film including Antonio Bendaras, Juliette Binoche Juliette Binoche was born on 9th March, 1964, in t >> Read More... , Rodrigo Santaro, James Brolin James Brolin was born in California of America on >> Read More... , to name a few. Antonio Bendaras, playing a prominent role, does full justice to his role while the others too did equally good.

Analysis

Hope is the only thing which supports us even when the whole world has forsaken us. In fact, hope can do wonders. The 33 men, who were trapped in the mine, had to rely on this mantra called hope, and they had their piece of valor. Their survival in the underground is the longest in the history of humans. The media and government are also associated with the rescue mission.
Patricia Riggen Patricia Riggen is a Mexican Film Director, Produc >> Read More... , the director, has borrowed inspiration from the screenplay of a book named Deep Down Dark, written by Hector Tobar.
The mine collapse is captured in an astounding manner by the director. We get to know the scale of the mishap and the confusion that followed, in its full sense. The CGI works are also done in a commendable manner.

What’s there?

  • The execution of the movie is par excellence.
  • The outstanding sound design complement well with the tempo of the movie.
  • Riggen has narrated the real life story in a restrained way.
  • The sets of the movie are one of the major USPs. They give you a genuine feeling.
  • Checoo Varese’s cinematography is commendable.
  • Michael Tronick’s editing is crisp.

What’s not there?

  • The screenplay doesn’t do justice to the story.
  • The intricacies of the real incident could have been handled well by Riggen.
  • There is no intensity in the portrayal of the several characters in the movie.
  • When the trapped men ultimately come out of the mine, they seem to show no sign of hardship, which is quite artificial to the viewer. The terror that should have been experienced by the trapped men could have been projected in a realistic manner.
  • The movie gives the feel of a television play.

Verdict

The survival against all odds and the triumph of the human spirit is attempted by Riggens, and she deserves special mention for that. The movie is watchable, despite a couple of flaws.
