Plot

The film is the biography of the eventful life of Moe Berg, played by Paul Rudd. Moe Berg was a baseball player who later worked as a spy for America during World War II World War II is a Malayalam information TV show on >> Read More... . The film follows Moe Berg’s career’s transition from being a professional baseball player to becoming a spy. Moe was a part of the Boston Red Sox, and his baseball career lasted for about fifteen years. Berg shot a video of Japanese harbor and their navy’s shipyards discreetly while on a goodwill baseball tour. This video, his educational background of Princeton, and his knowledge of numerous languages got him enlisted by the American government as a spy. When word spread that German scientist Werner Heisenberg, played by Mark Strong was on the verge of success in creating an atom bomb, Moe Berg was tasked with verifying this information and eliminating Heisenberg if the rumors were indeed true.

Star Performance

Paul Rudd delivers a good performance as Moe Berg, and successfully captures his coldness, intellect, and calmness. The other stars also deliver good performances, but are limited by their abysmal screen time.

Analysis

The film is a good documentary but often feels insufficient as it never delves into Berg’s emotional state, nor does it properly include all of Berg’s achievements as a spy. The film feels blank at times.

What’s There?

• The film has good cinematography, and detailed set and costumes

• The film has a stellar cast with Paul Rudd, Pierfrancesco Favino, Tom Wilkinson, Connie Nielsen, Anna Geislerova, Mark Strong, Simon Perina, John Schwab, Krystof Dupal, Jiri Vavrusa, Shea Wigham, Bobby Schofield, Philip Lenkowsky, and Sienna Miller

• The film is based on the true story of Moe Berg, without any additional dramatization

What’s Not There?

• Paul Rudd’s acting does not suffice to portray the cold, calculated intellect Moe Berg was

• The film is slow-paced and boring at times

Verdict

The film is more like a documentary than a war drama. The film has a very vast star cast, but most of them make very brief appearances insufficient to cause much impact. The story is raw and untouched. So, the film would be a good watch for history buffs, and for history and drama genre enthusiasts.
