Well, if we come to know that Benedict Cumberbatch is the lead, we surely expect some high funda pieces of stuff, mainly because of his outstanding portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. And, this ability of his, to portray a genius character, is the core strength of this movie.
Plot: The Britishers required someone, someone who is profound in cryptography, to crack various codes that included Nazi codes and especially Enigma, which even expert crypt analysts found it tougher to decipher. So, a new intelligent agency is created, which recruits Alan Turing, a mathematics alumnus from the Cambridge, in 1939. Turing forms a team, which analyzes the various Enigma messages. Simultaneously, he creates a machine, to decipher these messages. In 1952, Turing was sent to prison, due to the discovery of his homosexuality, which is illegal by law. So, does Turing and team succeed in their operation, with that machine during their deciphering times? And, after Turing's arrest, what happens to his mental health? Moreover, as a whole, what happens to him? Watch out the movie to find out.
Star Performances: There is no doubt about the performances in the film. They are mind blowing. While Cumberbatch mesmerizes the audience in each and every scene, Keira Knightley’s act is also to be appreciated, especially at times, where her brains are put to test. Also, mind-blowing supporting performances by Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance and Mark Strong gives the film a complete look.
Positives: Excellent acting combined with a thrilling story makes this movie more than just a drama. Supported by the beautiful creativity and a gripping screenplay, this film has set a bar for the biopics.
Negatives: Although this film is inclined towards the positive reviews, it must be said that there are small holes here and there. The way it handles homosexuality is not up to the mark. Although this isn’t a big deal, it is a little void left by the film.
Verdict: This is definitely one of the rare films that satisfy the nerds. Each and every part of the film is taken care of beautifully by the director and thus, if you want to time travel to the world war 2 times and scratch your heads by solving puzzles along with a genius, then this is the film for you.
