Plot

In 1962, swindlers Chester and Colette MacFarland were touring Greece. Here, they meet Rydal Keener, a tour guide who cons the visiting tourists.

However, what began as a simple dinner invitation, turns into a never-ending chase, following the accidental death of a private detective. As Rydal is drawn to Colette, and Chester tries to evade the authorities by any means, who will prevail?

Star Performances

Hossein Amini delivers a home run in his directorial debut. Given the era the plot is set in, one could almost expect a cameo of Alfred Hitchcock midway.

The trio of Viggo, Kirsten, and Oscar have done a phenomenal job. They keep the momentum going, even as the authorities are after them.

Analysis

If you are a fan of old-school murder mysteries, Hossein Amini has just delivered the right film for you. ‘The Two Faces of January,’ based on the book of the same name, is a surprisingly good adaptation, that focuses more on the substance than the style.

It seems that Hossein Amini is a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock because he has made generous use of the effects popularized by the ‘master of suspense.’ Many will find it hard to believe that this is just the first project of Hossein as a film director.

Set in the early 60s, the film starts on a decent note, but soon takes a turn for the better, with twists very few could anticipate. What’s the point of a good thriller if you can predict the next twist from miles away?

The visuals are equally stunning, showing Athens, Crete, and Istanbul with an old-school charm. The acting performances are great, but the ultimate showstopper is Oscar Isaac. Known previously for his acting brilliance in the film ‘ Inside Llewyn Davis Click to look into! >> Read More... ,’ Oscar has proved that he is an actor with the potential to do the unthinkable. With a role as layered as that of Rydal, Oscar leaves a lasting impression.

What's There?

  • An innovative homage to the likes of Alfred Hitchcock
  • Brilliant screenplay and direction by Hossein Amini
  • Great acting performances from Viggo Mortensen, Oscar Isaac, and Kirsten Dunst

What's Not There?

  • Minor flaws in editing

Verdict

'The Two Faces of January’ is a noble homage to the old school thrillers, popularized by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch David Lynch is a renowned American film director, >> Read More... . In his directorial debut, Hossein Amini delivers a surprisingly good package, with Oscar Isaac as the standout performer.
