Plot

Matias O’Brien, played by Colin Woodell, brings home a laptop he found in a cyber café. While he is on a call with his friends Damon, played by Andrew Lees; Nari, played by Betty Gabriel; Serena, played by Rebecca Rittenhouse; A.J., played by Connor Del Rio; and Lexx, played by Savira Windyani, he gets messages on that laptop from someone named Erica addressed to Norah C. IV, the owner of the laptop. Matias decided to return the laptop to the café but received messages from Charon68. He soon realizes that the laptop is still connected to the dark web and the owner is involved in some shady business. When Matias picks up a video call from his deaf girlfriend, he finds out that the call was from Norah or Charon IV. He decides to go to Norah and hand the laptop over to save his girlfriend. The film follows Matias, his friends, and his girlfriend as they are toyed with and tortured by unknown individuals from the dark web called the Charons.

Analysis

The film portrays the dangers lurking in the dark web and how one wrong decision can ruin one’s life. The film becomes frustrating to watch because of the protagonists’ reckless actions, which incessantly increase his problems and endanger others close to him.

What’s There?

  • The film has an exciting and novel concept
  • The film is full of thrill and horror scenes

What’s Not There?

  • The protagonist’s reckless actions are frustrating to watch because he puts his friends and girlfriend in harm’s way.
  • The audio interruptions and loud noises in the film are distracting.

Verdict

The film has a unique concept but uses the same old horror film tropes, such as a protagonist who dives in head first without logic or knowledge of the consequences of his actions. So, “Unfriended: Dark Web” would be a good one-time watch for horror and thriller genre enthusiasts.
