Plot

The movie kicks with Diane (Virginie Efira) leaving her phone in the restaurant after having a heated conversation with her ex. Miraculously Alexandre (Jean Dujardin), a young, rich architect, finds her phone and they begin talking. His phone etiquettes are such that he wins a date with her. When they finally meet, Diane is surprised to see that Alexandre is vertically challenged, and is only 4ft 5in (135 centimeters) but she enjoys her time with him. Later as the time goes by she's confused about her feelings to him considering her inhibitions. Will she accept Alexandre he way he is? Will love triumph above all?

Analysis

Up for love is a different story. The lead pair is not perfect, they have their own reservations and ambitions. The characters are well written, and beautifully enacted. The chemistry between Alexandre and Diane does not go unnoticed. The movie tells us there’s more to love than physical appearance, and that happiness is from what we feel when our loved ones are around. The actor’s height is diminished using effects. The character Alexandre is shown vertically challenged due to a childhood disorder, and you feel the need of a better casting (a vertically challenged actor than Dujardin) due to poor effects, also the background score just doesn’t know where to go.

Star Performances

Jean Dujardin plays Alexandre pretty well. If you disregard the graphics effects, he expresses everything with his facial expressions. Virginie Efira plays the young spirited lawyer Diane in a brilliant manner. Cedric Kahn is shown as Diane’s ex Bruno. The star performances are good.

What’s there?

Up for love is a different kind of love story. It’s a movie with a message. It dwells on the predominant mindset of people with their ideas of love and romance. The actors have done a splendid job as well.

What’s not there?

The computer and graphic effects are poor and non-expertly shot. The background score isn’t on point as well. The narrative is average.

Verdict

Overall, Up for love is a different film altogether. Even though being a remake, the feature continues to have its own charm be the actor’s dialogue delivery or the lady’s confusion. But, above all, the movie teaches us a lesson of grave importance.
