“We Need to Talk About Kevin” is a drama, but it is not just any drama, it is the tale of how a mother, come to know about the numerous acts of her son. The movie took its form from the book, which shares the same name, and was penned by Lionel Shriver. The onscreen adaptation of this book was directed by Lynne Ramsay Lynne Ramsay was born on the 5th of December, 1969 >> Read More... . It starred Tilda Swinton Born in the UK to Judith Balfour and John Swinton, >> Read More... and John Reilly in the prime and leading roles. Moreover, this movie was also nominated for a couple of awards including the Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild.

Plot:

At the outset, it is a movie which is completely told in a flashback mode. Eva, who is an acclaimed travel writer, is coming to terms with the imprisonment of her son, Kevin, due to a crime he committed at his High School. The movie is all about the ostracized emotions that the neighbours show on Eva and how she copes with the same. Eva also comes to understand that Kevin has been a problematic child all along. He is recoiled, recluse and even violent. What causes real alarm to Eva is that Kevin even has jealousy and hatred towards his own sister. With such things mounting, they take a toll on Eva’s marriage. She recounts all these memories and keeps visiting her son in prison. Towards the fag end, the movie shows that Kevin is to be transferred to an adult prison, and he is still not aware of why he had committed all the crime.

Verdict:

The plot-line is indeed different from the others. Swinton did a fabulous role, which eventually lead to her being nominated for a BAFTA for the Best Actress. However, the cases of violence and outbreaks in the film may certainly not appeal to all. Though it is a good watch, it just managed to trigger lukewarm responses.
