“Baat Ban Gayi” is supposed to be a comedy film, modeled on the “disguised or double identity” plots of the 70s – easily reminding of films like “ Chupke Chupke With serials like Kuldeepak which has been recentl >> Read More... ” or “ Seeta Aur Geeta Seeta aur Geeta is an Indian Television drama seri >> Read More... ”. It is indeed a plot akin to the Comedy of Errors, since the main male characters all seem to be having their ‘doubles” that are perfect look-alikes, but diametrically opposite in nature. The film also sees Gulshan Grover Gulshan Kumar is Bollywood’s most sought-after vil >> Read More... shed his now entrenched bad man image in both his dual roles - appearing as a respected professor in one and as a comic choreographer in the other.

Plot: The hero of the film is Kabir ( Ali Fazal Ali Fazal is an Indian actor who was born on 15th >> Read More... ), a reasonably established author in his own rights, but he has to pose as a know-all expert. Not so much in the eyes of his girlfriend Rachna, but more so in the perception of her elder professor brother, Laxmi Nivas (Gulshan Grover). Kabir’s chances of making a swift beeline to his lady love however, gets hampered by the appearance of his exact replica in looks - Rasiya Bihari who is a well-known goon in the area.

Also, one hired by a local don, Razzak Khan Razzak (Razak) Khan celebrates his birthday on the >> Read More... (Carlos Rehbar Pasha) to broaden his real estate ambitions, and prevail upon the professor to vacate his bungalow. Rasiya’s mission is also to uproot one Debu Daruwala (Gulshan Grover in a double role), a choreographer with gay tendencies, and whose list of ex-pupils includes names like Prabhu Deva Story soon >> Read More... and Farha Khan. With two double roles in the film, the sequence of events in the plot predictably takes a comic turn with misunderstandings galore between the opposing numbers. It takes quite a while for Kabir and Rachna to convince the professor to accept Kabir in matrimony for his sister.

Review: The film also consumes a great footage to get rid of the villainous acts of the “doubles” and to set right the record of who is who behind the similar faces. As expected the events lead to a happy ending once the right characters are identified and the two lovers are united - something they thought they could achieve in the very first five minutes into the movie! As exploited in numerous films of the past, plots with double identities have always generated either elements of absorbing suspense or side-splitting comic scenarios.

Unfortunately, Shuja Ali Shuja Ali is well known for filmmaking. He is a di >> Read More... , the director seems to have missed out on both these opportunities, and instead dragged the double role idea almost to death. It is the inept screenplay that lets the film down and in spite of a seemingly promising start, the film ends up nowhere. As for the acting, other than Ali Fazal in the lead role and to some extent Gulshan Grover in his gay comic role, none of the other actors leave any impression. While the technical departments have been fairly competent, the overall impact of the film gets lost, especially in the second half due to the directionless script.

Verdict: The film no doubt has some entertainment quotient but ultimately would leave a bland taste in the mouth by the time the audience has finished viewing it.
