Plot

In the early 90s, Karan Kapoor Karan Kapoor is an actor and model who was in the >> Read More... , an ambitious college student, decides to start his business venture. He opens a business venture with his college friends Chandu and Zing. As an aspiring model Bulbul joins them, the group aims big and soon makes it to the USA. However, greed gets the better of Karan and he soon distances himself from others. Can Karan realize the consequences of his actions, before it is too late?

Star Performances

For a debut director, Parmeet Sethi scores a winner with an innovative script. Despite the flaws, he manages to make the experience engaging and intriguing.

The gang of four, led by Shahid Kapoor packs a solid punch. Pavan Malhotra as the suave entrepreneur Jazz gives solid support.

Analysis

In Indian cinema, making films about business is not seen kindly by either the critics or the audience. As such, making a movie, that too set around the post-liberalization era was one hell of a risk that YRF took.

However, as the director, Parmeet Sethi delivers on this risky venture. In some ways, he has made a film that is slick, and rather ahead of its time. It does not make tall claims, but plays with the mind, just like the protagonist Karan does. This film is like a 2-hour-long marketing class, which actually evokes interest!

The acting performances are also great. For Shahid Kapoor, who is going through a rough patch, it is great to see that he has not given up on experimenting with his roles. He is ably supported by Anushka Sharma, Vir Das, and Meiyang Chang. Anupam Kher is decent as usual. Pavan Malhotra as the crafty entrepreneur Jazz is another pleasant surprise.

The movie has its flaws, though. Post-interval, the narrative loses focus, and the viewers find it hard to concentrate. The lack of experience is visible in such scenes. However, the acting performances maintain the balance.

What's There?

  • A surprisingly innovative screenplay
  • Decent direction by Parmeet Sethi
  • A bold initiative in terms of content
  • Brilliant performances by Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang, and Vir Das
  • Solid support from Pavan Malhotra and Anupam Kher

What's Not There?

  • Incoherent narrative
  • Not-so-impressive soundtrack

Verdict

'Bal Ganesh 2’ aimed to be a fitting sequel to the popular animation flick ‘Bal Ganesh’. The lack of a proper storyline, followed by the awkward integration of various plot elements, made it a bit underwhelming. The voice casting, however, made honest efforts. This film is best as a one-time watch!
