Department is yet another Ram Gopal Varma film whose main aim is to end the atrocities of the underworld by crossing the limits of the law. Well, let’s see whether the movie manages to leave a mark.

Plot

Sanjay Dutt, who is an inspector, forms a special department to fight against the evil doings of mafia dons. Along with Rana Daggubati, Dutt embarks on teaching a lesson or to the underworld dons including Vijay Raaz. And to add to the attraction of the movie, Bachchan enters as the politician who was earlier a don. Watch the movie to know how RGV presents his favorite subject: delving into the world of crime.

Star Performances

The pivotal characters including Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, and Rana Daggubati (Daggubati has delivered a stellar performance and deserves special mention) understand what is required of them. Vijay Raaz’s character is not sketched well while Abhimanyu Singh is quite good. Madhu Shalini is attractive while Laxmi Manchu does a neat job. Anjana Sukhani does a great job while Deepak Tijori, who is a good actor, doesn’t get enough scope to perform.

Analysis

Ram Gopal Varma is a director who doesn’t compromise on his vision and Department is one such film. In Department, he presents the war of power with ease and in fact brings the picture of crime in a convincing manner. The tried-too-many-times genre itself can be forgiven but the screenplay plays spoilsport.

What’s there?

  • The visual tempo of the movie is pretty good.
  • Dharam-Sandeep’s background score elevates the film.

What’s not there?

  • The film is filled with too much action sequences. However, certain action sequences have been shot well.
  • The writing is weak.
  • You get a feeling, “I have already seen it” while watching many scenes.
  • The insertion of some songs is not at all necessary for the flow of the film.

Verdict:

Department has nothing new to offer…with a good cast, the movie could have been better but unfortunately fails to leave an impression.
