It is a tale of a man who rises from the street and becomes a business magnate through his determination, grit and perseverance. Guru is not a biopic, but it has similarities with the life of the successful Indian textile merchant Dhirubhai Ambani.
Plot
The movie begins from 1951, set in a village of Gujarat. A young and ambitious boy, Gurukant Desai lives here with big dreams in his eyes. However, his father always tries to pull him back by saying he should not dream as they never come true.
Gurukant goes to Bombay with his wife, Sujata (Aishwarya Rai), brother-in-law Jignesh (Arya Babbar), and his dreams to make big. Soon he realizes the bitter truth of this common word that it is controlled by some affluent and powerful people and it won’t be easy to make his mark here.
Guru meets Manik "Nanaji" Dasgupta (Mithun Chakraborty), publisher of newspaper Swatantra, in Mumbai. Nanaji treats Guru as his son and helps him during his initial struggle but when he comes to know about Guru’s wrong practices he decides to expose him with Shyam’s (R. Madhavan) help.
Despite all the obstacles, he starts Shakti Trading Company and climbs the ladder of success never to look back.
Analysis
After watching Guru I realized what took so long (two years) to make this movie. The story has meaning and depth in it. It seems that actors (who are part of this film) were born to do their respective roles. Every character fits the role and has put their heart and soul in their work. For instance, the way Abhishek has lost and gained the weight during different parts of the movie clearly shows how hard and seriously he has worked.
Mayya Mayya and Barso Re make the opening of this movie magical and Gurukant’s court room roar gives it a fantastic ending. Magical music, qualitative cinematography, simple narrative, inspiring and captivating story is what makes this period drama exciting and worth watching.
Star Performances Abhishek has performed spectacularly. He has played a complex role with such an ease. He is totally into the character and as an audience, you too go through every single emotion that he experiences on-screen. It seems that character “Guru” is written keeping Abhishek in mind.
Aishwarya’s performance is as stunning as her looks. With her world-class performance, she has shown she is a treasure of talent. The veteran actor, Mithun Chakraborty has given a natural performance, and Madhavan's performance is equally good as an honest reporter. Not once I felt that any character has been forcefully added.
What’s there?
Watch Guru for its inspiring and captivating story. Score and soundtrack given by A.R. Rahman is stupendous. However, 'Ek Lo Ek Muft' could have been easily skipped. Rajiv Menon's cinematography is top-notch. The time period from the 1950s to the present day is very well captured. Dialogues are very well written and executed. The screenplay is great.
What’s not there?
Guru’s loopholes can be easily neglected, for instance Jignesh is nowhere in the picture after the quarrel he had with Gurukant and Abhishek’s older and not so natural look, considering its story and star’s performances.
