Lal Bahadur Shastri’s enthusiastic slogan for agricultural reforms has been used as a title of a deeply monotonous and uninspiring movie which claims to be a biopic of his life. Now let’s delve into the movie.

Plot

Set in the backdrop of the pre- independence India when freedom movements were wide spread and growing, the movie attempts to juxtapose Shastriji’s personal struggles as well as his role in the freedom movement. However, no deep research seems to have been done in his life and the movie; instead of developing into the tale of a hero ends up becoming a time-line which touches the prominent points of the freedom struggle and portrays the protagonist as a whiny, preachy dejected man who somehow stumbled upon success.

Star Performances

A particularly bad job seems to have been done on the casting of the film, where different actors are hired to play Shastriji at different stages of his life. These actors have no physical resembling with Shastriji or with each other and the fact that over different ages, the protagonist is shown to have glaringly different heights is quite embarrassing. The cast of the movie despite having versatile actors like Om Puri Om Rajesh Puri is one of the widely noted senior a >> Read More... and Prem Chopra Prem Chopra is a legend of Hindi cinema and he has >> Read More... fails to make any impression on the viewer.

Analysis

The protagonist’s personal struggles like the sudden death of his father, the abject poverty he lives in, and the conditions of his personal life during the freedom struggle gives the film a hue of a sob story than an inspiring one.

What’s there?

The movie has good intention.

What’s not there?

The direction, cinematography, screenplay, and acting are all abysmal. The movie takes a huge burden on itself and then fails to live up to. The movie is almost insulting to the greatness of the figure it tries to portray.

Verdict

Apart from the intentions, nothing seems to have gone right with the story.
