“Maazii,” (meaning ‘past’), apart from its contextual implications in the plot of the film, has a tinge of the flavor of the past era of thrillers, as distinct from the type of raucous thrillers we seem to have got used to in current films. Without in any way being less candid or attempting a gloss over, the film exhibits a finesse that does not seem to be the handiwork of a debutant director, although this is the first film of director Jaideep Chopra Jaideep Chopra is an Indian film director, produce >> Read More... . In another first of sorts, the main lead in the film is also the story and screenplay writer.

Plot: The happenings in the film begin in the scenic hills of Mussoorie, where the central character Tarun ( Sumit Nijhawan Sumit Nijhawan was born on 28th December 1978 is a >> Read More... ) is a florist and leads a blissful life with his wife Shrishti ( Mona Wasu Mona Vasu sometimes spelt as “Mona Wasu”, was born >> Read More... ). The first signs of the events to follow occur when Tarun’s life comes to the limelight after an unfortunate accident, which ironically turn him into a hero. At the same time, this gives rise to a series of unfortunate events that damage the personal life of Tarun almost beyond repair and includes the kidnapping of his daughter Minal (Saanvi Sharma). While Tarun vows to get back his daughter, a chain of events take him back to the past as he gradually discovers links with his past life that seem responsible for the present happenings.

His pursuit into his past life reveals the clues that would ultimately lead him to the person who is causing all this damage to his personal life. For this, he has to travel from the serene hills of his native Mussorie to the unruly and chaotic plains of Meerut. This is where one after another of the ghastly deeds of the past gets unfolded, and the main protagonist, Tarun discovers his links with shady events and persons in the past. As the narrative goes from one link to another – each more surprising than the previous one, the suspense and thrills reach a crescendo, till, at the ultimate end, all the pieces fall into place with a logical conclusion, which had kept the audience guessing all through.

Review: For a film with no flashy names or a first time director, it really turns out to be a surprise package, and by the time the film ends most of the audience is awe stuck at the manner the events have moved and have been handled without a semblance of anything being out of place. Interestingly, director Chopra is ably complemented by his lead actor Sumeet Nijhawan Sumit Nijhawan was born on 28th December 1978 in M >> Read More... , who also is in charge of the story and screenplay, and thus has a significant role to play in the film. As for his own acting ability, his being a relative newcomer helps in building up the character of Tarun, who after all has to have the traits of the man next door, with no pretensions to being someone important. Amongst the others who draw notice are Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub and the veteran Pankaj Tripathi Pankaj Tripathi is an acclaimed Indian film actor >> Read More... . What also deserve significant mention is the brilliant cinematography of Surjodeep Ghosh Surjodeep Ghosh is an Indian cinematographer who w >> Read More... and the freshness of the music composed by Faizan Hussain.

Verdict: This is a film that can be recommended wholeheartedly not only for those who like thrillers but also for the overall competent manner in which an interesting theme is developed.
