Raja Natwarlal was produced by UTV Motion Pictures by Siddharth Roy Kapur. It was directed by Kunal Deshmukh and written by Parveez Shaikh. The film is a crime based drama which features Emraan Hashmi and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles along with others. The film marked the debut of Pakistani bombshell Humaima Malick. The film released on 29th August 2014.

Plot

Raja and Raghav are partners in crime. They together con people for a living. Raghav played by Deepak Tijori is also Raja’s best friend. In a bar, Raja falls for Ziya played by Humaima Malick. He feels sorry for her and does not want her to work at the bar. He decides to make their living by going for a big catch. Raja loves Ziya from his heart and wants to marry her after he finishes his work. Raja and Raghav come together to make a plan. They successfully fool two gangsters and run away. Raja decides to celebrate with Ziya. Meanwhile, the two gangsters are killed by Varda Yadav for losing the money. He commands his men to find Raja and Raghav and kill them. While Raja is enjoying with Ziya, Raghav is killed by Varda’s men. Raja is witness to Raghav’s murder and decides to take revenge. He along with Yogi played by Paresh Rawal set out to kill Varda. Yogi trains Raja and forms a team of crooks that would travel with him to help Raja. Varda is fooled to buy a cricket team worth 500 crores but the police intervene then itself, but the plan is so cleverly crafted that Raja has fooled Varda to 1500 crores and has died, according to police. In the end, it is revealed that Ziya is also a part of the plan and is giving police the information that Raja asks her to give. Varda goes mad at his loss while Raja and team have fled with 1500 crores. Raja thanks Yogi and lives happily after with Ziya.

Star Performances

Paresh Rawal shines in his performance as the angry, foul-mouthed, and clever mentor. Kay Kay Menon and Emraan Hashmi are also convincing. Pakistani star Humaima looks graceful in the film.

Analysis

The film was initially named ‘Shaatir’ but was later changed to Raja Natwarlal. The title was inspired from the 1979 released ‘Mr. Natwarlal’. It was speculated to be a remake of the 1979 Amitabh Bachchan starrer, but Kunal Deshmukh cleared all the doubts. Emraan Hashmi plays Raja, the lead role in the film. Humaima Malick plays the love interest of Raja. Kay Kay Menon as Varda is a billionaire based in Cape Town. Deepak Tijori makes a guest appearance. Kunal Deshmukh’s directorial did not impress much, but the music had been widely praised.

The movie has appealing frames.

What’s not there?

  • Sometimes we feel that the movie is in dearth of logic.
  • The dialogues of Raja Natwarlal are interesting.

Verdict

The film may not be considered as the best con film but still it entertains you in terms of performances and fun.
