Saawariya’ is based on “White Nights”, which is written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This is the debut movie of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor- both belong to Bollywood families. This movie is the first Indian movie produced by a Hollywood Production House.

PLOT:

The story starts when a homeless guy, Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) relocates to a small town and orders a glass of milk in a bar. He then encounters Gulabji (Rani Mukherji), a prostitute who offers to spend a night with him, but Raj refuses. Gulabji redirects him to Lilian (Zohra Seghal), who gives rooms on rent. Impressed by the charming boy, Lilian gave him a room. Soon, Raj gets a job as a singer in a local restaurant. While returning home from the restaurant on Eid, he finds a girl standing on the bridge. Raj found her attractive and befriends her. He then started asking her about her name, her work and place. She said she is Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who lives with her blind grandmother and aunt. She is a carpet weaver. Raj falls in love with Sakina, and just when Raj is about to confess his love to her, Sakina tells him that she is already dreaming of Imaan ( Salman Khan), a former tenant of her grandmother and has already given her heart to him.

Imaan promised her he would return on Eid, but has not done so. Sakina finds out Imaan’s address and ask’s Raj to deliver a letter to him. Heartbroken, Raj destroys the letter, but still goes to that place. He finds out that there is no person named Imaan that ever lived here. He recollects himself and decides to tell his feelings to Sakina. With Gulabji’s advice and support, on Eid, he took Sakina to a restaurant and sings her favorite song to impress her. After that, Sakina leaves with hopes to meet Imaan. Raj again felt bad and goes to Gulabji, who is in love with Raj, to sleep with her. Gulabji gets upset and throws him out. He then goes to the place where Sakina is waiting for Imaan. Sakina made up her mind that Imaan is not going to come now; she decides to live with Raj. Twist in the story is that Imaan is already waiting for Sakina on the bridge. Seeing this, Sakina hesitates and Raj finally allows Sakina to go with her first choice, Imaan.

ANALYSIS:

It’s always a treat to watch Sanjay Leela Bansali’s movies, because of their beautiful sets, style and substance. However, when particularly talking about Saawariya, then there is only style and no substance. With a director like Sanjay Leela Bansali you expect more. It’s a romantic love story, but you will hardly relate with the emotions of the characters. There is nothing new except the lead cast. Saawariya suffers because of the writing mainly. Few things are unraveled- one is why Imaan (Salman) disappears and Sakina, besides his name, knows nothing about him. You will encounter plenty of questions while watching this movie if you choose to.

STAR PERFORMANCES:

Ranbir Kapoor is extremely talented, no doubt in that. He is sincere towards the character and yes, handsome and eye candy to all persons who love chocolate guy. The Kapoors must be proud after seeing Ranbir’s work in Saawariya. Sonam Kapoor, on the other hand, was average. She did justice to the work and honestly, her role doesn’t give her the opportunity to display histrionics. She looks gorgeous in the movie though.

Rani Mukherji is good. She played a prostitute better than Laga Chunari Mein Daag, and her role was small, but meaningful. Zohra Segal is adorable and Salman Khan’s role is a mystery.

WHAT'S THERE?

1. Movie has beautiful sets and amazing music with awesome lyrics.

2. Ranbir Kapoor dancing in a towel.

3. Cinematography by Ravi Chandran is very good.

WHAT'S NOT THERE?

1. Dept in the story.

2. You will not feel connected with the characters most of the time.

VERDICTS:

If you want to see the debut actors then go and watch, but it’s a onetime watch. Otherwise, I would suggest you to sit back and read the original White Night and have a deeper understanding of the story.
