It is a light-hearted film about the inherent practices of patriarchy embedded deep within society.

Plot

The film Samosa and Sons unfolds in the beautiful hills of Uttarakhand. In a small town, we see an eccentric couple living a happy life. Chandan Koranga, played by Chandan Bisht, a samosa shop owner, is married to Dhwani, played by Neha Garg Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , a modern and open-minded woman. They have a 7-year-old daughter together. Their family is very happy, yet the lack of sons in their family faces criticism from society.

Chandan was deeply attached to his late father. As the film gains momentum, we see him interacting with his late father’s ghost. They have encounters every night, where they talk about everything.

Chandan’s father, in his supernatural form, tries to instil the desire for boy child in his son’s mind. Slowly, this begins to take up space in Chandan’s brain, creating tension between him and his progressive wife.

Star Performance

The stars of this film are Chandan Bisht and Neha Garg. Chandan Bisht plays the role of a simple-minded, somewhat naive, but dedicated man from a small town. He delves into the ordinariness of the character and delivers a strong performance.

Neha Garg plays Chandan’s wife, a progressive and bold modern woman. She has acted quite well and maintained the essence of her character.

Another hilarious addition to the film is Sanjay Mishra, who plays the role of Chandan's ghost father. He is quirky and eccentric in the best possible way and Sanjay Mishra demonstrates his acting process perfectly with this role.

Analysis

Samosa and Sons is light-hearted and satirical. Yet, it carries the undertone of an important social message.

Through its representation of Chandan's father and the society that Chandan lives in, the film explores the impact of patriarchy on our society, visible clearly in the desire of every father and every family to have a boy. They also highlight the position of women, who are often expected to sacrifice for their family. The writing of the film is intricate and beautiful. It uses Chandan and Dhwani's characters as two aspects of the same narrative.

Chandan's character, in particular, is well-written. He is shown to be perpetually torn between the traditional beliefs and lifestyle advocated by his father and the open-mindedness of the wife. His constant struggle with trying to balance out the two is both funny and thought-provoking. It makes for an interesting commentary on the coexistence of tradition with modernity and whether the two can be merged together.

Although the film does explore some serious themes, the majority of theme is still quite humorous and satirical. The humorous aspects of the film only enhance the plot further and make the film all the more entertaining. The plot of this film is also extremely relevant, exploring themes such as patriarchy, societal hypocrisy, and challenges faced by women. The humor elements take away the monotony and make the film easy to digest as well.

However, the films lacks in terms of execution. Some parts are too long and feel dragged out, yet there are certain themes, scenes, and character developments in the film that could have used more screentime.

What's There?

  • The film is funny and thought-provoking.
  • The acting by the cast is really good.

What's Not There?

  • Some parts of the film could have been explored more deeply.
  • Some scenes are unnecessarily long.

Verdict

Samosa and Sons is cute, funny and thought-provoking. Though there are certainly flaws within its execution, all in all the film makes for a mostly entertaining experience.
