Hadinelentu is a Kannada-language film released in 2022. Revolving around a poignant coming-of-age narrative and a sharp social commentary, the film was directed by Prithvi Konanur A new era in Indian cinema for children movies ush >> Read More... . It stars Sherlyn Bhosale Bio coming soon... >> Read More... and Neeraj Matthew.

Plot

The name of the film, Hadinelentu, is derived from two Kannada words -- hadinelu, meaning 17, and hadinentu, meaning 18. This is a very carefully planned detail in the context of the film.

Hadinelentu starts with the visuals of a college campus bustling with students. Life is going about normally, with the rush of the day to day student life.

The shot cuts to the bathrooms in the campus, where a young couple from class 12, Hari (played by Neeraj Matthews) and Deepa (played by Sherlyn Bhosale), are recording a sex video in one of the bathroom stalls.

The video, meant for private eyes, gets leaked online in a tragic twist. Hari and Deepa's lives get turned upside down as they have to face their parents, teachers, friends, and society as a whole in the wake of this ridiculous event. They are thrown into countless legalities, and their lives are changed forever.

Star Performance

The cast of this film only adds to its brilliance. The two leads, Sherlyn Bhosale and Neeraj Matthew, have done a phenomenal job capturing the essence of being a young teenager, the struggles, the desperation, the complexities of their characters; they breathe new life into already well-written characters.

The rest of the cast, whether it's Ravi Hebbali, Rekha Kudligi Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , Bhavani Prakash Bhavani Prakash is a Kannada movie actress who was >> Read More... or the others, have all done a spectacular job. The performances of all actors feel natural and heartfelt, making the film all the more touching.

Analysis

Hadinelentu is an extremely relevant commentary on social issues, such as the inherent inequalities of society, the stigma, the stereotypes, etc. The film explores these issues beautifully, with a blend of seriousness and humor.

Hari belongs to a higher caste, whereas Deepa belongs to a lower one. This creates even more complexities in their story. The film highlights not only the injustice against lower classes but also against women, when the courtesy of not seeing the sex video to save the child from embarrassment is only offered to Hari's family but not Deepa's. Throughout the film, subtle details show Deepa's family on a lower footing, with one scene even showing Deepa's mother offering to clean Hari's house in exchange for them to not create problems in Deepa's life.

The college authorities are also shown to be biased against Deepa not only because she has a history of being a problematic student, but because of the fact that she is a girl.

The film also talks about the stigma that students face, with small but impactful scenes, like when a teacher forces Deepa and Hari to sit maintaining distance from each other. The film hints that this kind of repression of natural topics like sex could be the reason why students fall into problems like this in the first place.

The film explores all these issues in a light but meaningful manner. Additionally, it is also a technically sound film, with engaging visuals and a good soundtrack. The plot flows seamlessly, and the brilliant writing by Prithvi Konanur and Anupama Hegde is evident is every scene.

What's There?

  • Amazing plot
  • Technically adept film.

What's Not There?

  • Soundtrack could be better.

Verdict

Hadinelentu is a well-written, well-rounded, and exceptional take on the state of society. It is a must watch, especially for teenagers who are struggling with the issues talked about in the film.
