Kannada films have touched the subject of Transgenders earlier. But the saddening part is that these people are the victims of unsophisticated jokes. Lingadevaru, the director of this film, has broken all these formulas and came out with a good depiction of the transgender.

The lead role of this film is essayed by a transgender and this is indeed a brave attempt. This is perhaps the best flick on transgender films Indian cinema has ever witnessed. This protagonist wants to change himself as a total transsexual, braving the inadequacy of his innate nature. The film just showcases the society as it is without forcing anything on the viewer. Anoop Seelin’s music is adept and Arasu Anthare’s lyrics are good. Cinematography of Ashok Raman is laudable for its realism.

Plot: Adapted from a Transgender’s autobiography, I am Vidya, this film hits the bull’s eyes with its hard-hitting message. Lingadevaru has done his best to animate the lives of Transgenders and also brings before our eyes Cuddapah. Maadesha is a female, who learns early that she is fitted in a male body. The worry he faces from his family and the ire he faces from his society forces him to move to Bengaluru, along with his sister. After getting associated with a Hira community, Maadesha transforms into Vidya. But this process is not easy. But finally, when Vidya triumphs, it’s a victory to the Transgenders’ cause, as a whole.

The film is in fact like a biography getting a close look into the life of Maadesha. Lingadevaru strongly wants to drive home that Transgenders are also humans with emotions and dreams. Sundar and Sumithra does a commendable job. Makeup artists Raju and Nagaraju have done an appreciable job.

Verdict: The film should surely be watched for the powerful message it tries to drive in.
