Plot

Sassi is a grandstander and uses his unfair methods to get attention from others. He has no family but enjoys the company of a gang of friends. Due to extreme consumption of alcohol, the doctor finds out that he has very minimal time to live. Significantly, being an attention seeker, he orders a luxurious coffin to bury himself. The rest of the story deals with this aspect.

Star performance

Sreenivasan (who plays the role of Sassi) once again proves his acting skills, he has done it more efficiently, satisfying his fans as usual. Sreekumar’s acting felt more natural and it was good to watch. Kochu Preman is given a role that suits him well and he has given his best to it. All the other cast, Divya Gopinath, Anil Nedumangad, and Rajesh Sharma have done excellent acting in their assigned roles.

Analysis

Sassi lives without family but has friends who are always there for him, even in difficulties. As the poster of this movie conveys, he claims to be an artist. He purchases drawings from college students and sells paintings in exhibitions for a higher price. Direction feels like the typical day-to-day scenarios in one’s life are shot as a movie. Editing by Ajay Kuyiloor lacked creativity and was executed ordinarily. Throughout the movie, the cinematography is one-shot filming, an entire scene filmed in one continuous shot without a cut. The camera moves along with the character, viewers might find the camera’s movement uncomfortable, sometimes. It is a free-style dialogue delivery by all the characters. In this movie, they portray the importance of friendship which acts as a pillar of strength during difficult times. The Scenes felt realistic and natural. Kerala’s natural beauty is perfectly captured in this movie. It has shots of rivers, trees, and paddy fields that act as a breath of fresh air. The Music used in this movie has a folk touch to it.

The story revolves around a man who lives alone. Loneliness makes him an alcoholic as well as an attention seeker. Sajin Baabu has brought in the elements of caste and religion in this movie. According to different religious beliefs, there are various ways of cremation. Hindus believe that the soul gets attached to the body and refuses to leave; by burying the body, the soul is not given justice. This is why they burn the body after death. But Christians and Muslims bury to provide a permanent resting place for the body. This concept is used as a theme in this film. Religions and sections within them are shown to be fighting with each other for fame. The movie touches upon the brutal reality where even a dead body is marketed for fame. The role of caste in a person’s life is significant and can have long-lasting marks on one’s life. This idea is very well described through the main character’s life. Caste discrimination and its nuances like hypogamy show as a deciding factor in the life led by the main character. They have questioned caste discrimination using a folk song, “enthu thante theendalan”, which deals with untouchability and the illogical reasons behind its practice. Even though a perfect social message is conveyed through the movie, there is so much lag and unnecessary detailing.

What’s there?

  • A perfect message was given to the audience
  • Srinivasan’s acting is excellent
  • Persistence of friendship, even in dark times
  • Kerala’s beauty and tradition was very well portrayed

What’s not there?

  • Unnecessary detailing can be boring
  • Throughout the movie, there is  a lag in most of the scenes
  • The Cinematography could have been better

Verdict

The fans of Srinivasan will surely like his acting. It is a one-time watch movie that can be watched without much expectation. Overall it is a feel-good drama conveying a good social message to the audience.
