Kate Winslet here, is seen portraying the role of a single, struggling mother living with her thirteen year old son Henry aka Gattlin Griffith . Adele (Kate) is so traumatized by her separation with her husband, that going out of the house is a nightmare for her. Her fingers tremble as she goes out to do the daily, mundane household chores.
She is like a dead soul trapped in a fragile exterior. Her son is the only person to share her grief with. Her son tries his best to support and understand her. One fine day, as they go shopping to a nearby departmental store, they encounter this bleeding, firm stranger, who convinces them to take him with them to their house.
He is hurt and needs shelter. This stranger (Frank Brolin) starts living with them for a while; providing Adele with the affection of her missing husband, and also acts like a father to her son. But there lies a deep, hidden secret behind this man, which is the crux of the story. Director Jason Reitman is notorious for depicting lives of protagonists that are hard to figure.
After Juno, this warm, suave family drama combines with a little thrill, as the stranger’s past reveals a lot. Two people who cannot face the outside world anymore, come together and build a world of their own. This lovely film is based on the novel by Joyce Maynard entitled Labor Day.
